"The ocean covers 75% of the Earth's surface, including the Arctic and Antarctic glaciers. Development of underwater resources is underway, including oil and gas production on the continental shelf, building of desalination plants, laying of gas and oil pipelines, constructing tidal power plants and underwater bridges and tunnels. Soviet scientists are researching the ocean's biological, mineral, and energy resources, as well as human working conditions at great depths. Information about the ocean's atmosphere and waters is gathered using ships, automatic stations, aircraft, and satellites. This work is complex and challenging, as seen in the illustrations of the World Ocean's riches."
