About this piece of art
Or actually... about this piece of history. This flag has different names: Flag of the Soviet Union, The Hammer and Sickle; The Red and Gold; The Red Banner. The original version was adopted in December 1922 and the altered, last, version was in use in 1955 until 26 December 1991. The design of the 1955 flag served as a basis for all Soviet republic flags.
Symbolism and design
Red honors the red flag of the Paris Commune of 1871 (a revolutionary government). Debates over the policies and outcome of the Commune had significant influence on the ideas of Marx and Engels, who described it as the first example of the dictatorship of the proletariat. The red star and hammer and sickle are symbols of communism and socialism.
