2025: a wrap-up!

2025: a wrap-up!

What 2025 taught me about vintage, looking closely and slowing down... This year was not about big plans or fast turnover. It was a year of learning to look more carefully. At objects, at details, and at my own assumptions. Working with vintage objects and furniture teaches you as much through mistakes as through successes. This year made that very clear.

Looking too fast can cost money

One of the clearest lessons came from a small side table. At first glance everything felt right. Good proportions, nice teak wood, attractive patina. I bought it quickly and paid a bit too much. Only later did I notice a chip missing from the top. Not a disaster, but enough to affect its value. It was not bad luck. It was haste. I knew I had to either sell for less or add it to the items that need a little more work. Since then I knew I had to slow down, especially with smaller pieces.

The best finds appear in unexpected places

2025 confirmed something I had already suspected. The best objects tend to surface where expectations are lowest. In a small charity shop in rural Germany I discovered a complete Norwegian coffee set from the 1960s. At a modest antiques market in Spain I later found a Peill & Putzler lamp. Not in curated shops or design fairs, but in places many would overlook. Moments like these keep me going!

Research changes everything

Another memorable moment involved a lamp I bought thinking it was worth around a hundred euros. After taking the time to research it properly, I realised it was far rarer than expected. Its market value turned out to be closer to four hundred euros. The object itself had not changed, but my understanding of it had.

Learning beyond profit

Research goes far beyond financial insight. I care deeply about knowing where an object comes from, who designed it, and why it looks the way it does. Context gives an object its real value. Understanding its cultural background, intended function, and visual logic makes it meaningful rather than anonymous. I cannot sell objects I know nothing about, and I have no desire to do so. The process of learning, researching, and understanding matters more to me than financial gain.

Letting go of perfect photography

On a practical level, I learned that I do not need polished, styled photographs. My studio and storage space are enough. The light is honest and the setting is real. It suits both the objects and the way I work.

Recognising overlooked design

One thought kept returning throughout 2025. People throw away objects that are genuinely well designed. The simplest 1980s IKEA stool is a good example. Once ordinary, now highly appreciated by a younger generation. It shows how temporary value can be, and how important it is to keep looking with fresh eyes!

Attention and care

If there is one thing I take from 2025, it is this. Working with vintage is not about speed or clever tricks. Attention pays off, sometimes immediately, sometimes much later.
