Quality
Oblomov Art houses some real map-nutters, and we're thrilled to see this little atlas might have never been used. We would describe the condition as good to satisfactory due to age; of course the paper turned a bit yellow, but the colors of the maps are wonderfully preserved (please note this map is from 1926). Please check out the photos for more details.
Wilhelm Sieglin
Wilhelm Sieglin (1855 – 1935) was a German historian. His main field of research was historical geography. His main works are the historical atlas "Atlas antiquus" and a historical school atlas (the item you're looking at right now).
From 1880 Sieglin worked as an assistant as well as librarian at the Leipzig University Library and from 1880 to 1888 as an adjunct at the Russian Philological Institute of the University of Leipzig. In 1886 he became director of the university's coin collection, in 1888 curator and in 1896 first curator of the university library.
Sieglin began his academic career as an ancient historian. From the mid-1880s he increasingly turned to historical cartography. He published numerous philological, historical and geographical writings, including a collection of fragments of Lucius Coelius Antipater (Leipzig 1879), a map of the development of the Roman Empire (Leipzig 1885) and a school atlas on the history of antiquity (Gotha 1899 — this item you're looking at). His main work Atlas Antiquus or Atlas zur Geschichte des Altertums was published in six editions from 1893 to 1909. Sieglin was the founder and editor of Quellen und Forschungen zur alten Geschichte und Geographie, which appeared from 1901 to 1918.
