We've showed a map depicting the GDR / DDR in 1971. This time it's time to dive into the map of Sweden we found on the same location in Kiev, Ukraine.
A map of Sweden
Discovering hidden narratives within historical artifacts can transport us into a world of mystery and intrigue. Such is the case with a vintage Soviet-era map of Sweden, adorned with Russian (Cyrillic) text and embellished by intriguing handwritten notes and drawings.
Details
This original map of Sweden, originating from the Soviet era between 1970 and 1975, measures 52.0 x 84.0 cm. In Russian: "Швеция" (Shvetsiya).
Notes from the previous owner
What sets this map apart is the inclusion of handwritten notes and hand-drawn annotations left by its previous owner. These enigmatic additions evoke a sense of intrigue, hinting at a hidden narrative waiting to be explored. Power stations, heavy industry locations, and other significant points of interest are meticulously marked, suggesting a clandestine dimension to the map.
During the Soviet era, maps were essential tools for gathering strategic and geopolitical information about foreign countries. Given the map's Russian text and its production by GUGK (Main Department of Geodesy and Cartography), it likely served the Soviet Union's interests in identifying crucial industrial, infrastructure, and potentially military sites.
Preserving history, authenticity and mystery
In our role as custodians of history, we embrace the preservation of authenticity. The original notes and drawings have been left intact, allowing you to immerse yourself in the intrigue and hidden stories they may contain. While the full extent of these secrets may never be unveiled, the enigmatic markings serve as a testament to the captivating nature of this artifact.
